Is it Possible to Start a Master’s Degree Before or During NYSC Program?

Many people have been asking online whether it’s possible to pursue a postgraduate program before or during the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). However, they haven’t been satisfied with the answers they’ve received so far.
That’s why I decided to research this topic and provide you with comprehensive information. By the end of this article, I hope you’ll find my findings satisfactory.
Can I Pursue a Master’s Degree Before Completing NYSC Service?
Many youth corps members wish to pursue MSC, PGD, or other postgraduate courses while serving in the NYSC. Some even prefer to start their postgraduate studies while waiting to be mobilized.
Here’s what you need to know if you want to pursue a Master’s degree before or during NYSC.
Can I Pursue a Master’s Degree During NYSC Service?
Most universities in Nigeria do not require you to possess an NYSC certificate before enrolling in a postgraduate program. For instance, if we consider the University of Ilorin’s postgraduate advertisement, there is no mention of the need for an NYSC certificate before pursuing a Master’s degree.
Therefore, you can obtain their postgraduate forms immediately after graduation, and it’s also possible to pursue their postgraduate programs while serving in the NYSC.
Can I Pursue a Master’s Degree or Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) Without an NYSC Certificate?
I have come across a few courses at the University of Ibadan (UI) that do require an NYSC certificate, exemption certificate, or exclusion letter. However, this condition only applies to Nigerian graduates at UI.
Below is a list of courses at UI that require an NYSC certificate for applying to their Master’s programs:
- Professional Degree Master of Public Health (M.P.H) in Field Epidemiology
- Academic Master’s Degree in Otorhinolaryngology
- PG Diploma in Forensic Odontology
- Any M.Sc Program in the Department of Radiology
- M.Sc. B.Sc. Biostatistics
- M.Sc. Clinical Epidemiology
- M.Sc. Epidemiology
- M.Sc. Marketing and Consumer Studies
At Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), all courses generally require NYSC discharged certificates. However, the university accepts Exemption certificates or exclusion letters if the discharge certificate is not available.
Conclusion
In conclusion, pursuing a postgraduate program before or during the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a possibility for many individuals in Nigeria.
Most universities do not require an NYSC certificate before enrolling in a Master’s degree program, allowing graduates to start their postgraduate studies immediately after graduation or even while serving in the NYSC.
While some courses at specific universities may require an NYSC certificate, exemption certificate, or exclusion letter, this requirement generally applies to Nigerian graduates and is limited to certain programs.
It’s important to check the specific requirements of each university and program to determine if an NYSC certificate is necessary.
Overall, the opportunity to pursue a postgraduate degree before or during the NYSC provides flexibility for individuals who wish to further their education and career prospects.
As always, it is advisable to gather accurate and up-to-date information from the relevant institutions to make informed decisions regarding postgraduate studies and the NYSC requirements.
