If you are a registered nurse (RN) in Nigeria, you might be wondering if you have to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. The NYSC is a compulsory one-year service program for all Nigerian graduates under the age of 30. It aims to foster national unity and integration, as well as develop leadership and social responsibility among young Nigerians.

The answer to this question is NO, registered nurses do not go to NYSC. This is because RNs are considered critical healthcare providers, and their participation in NYSC could potentially disrupt patient care and hinder their professional development. RNs are exempted from NYSC due to their advanced level of training and the immediate need for their professional services in the healthcare sector.

However, this does not mean that all nurses are exempted from NYSC. Nurses who have obtained a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Nursing are required to participate in the NYSC program.

An HND in Nursing is a three-year program offered by polytechnics and schools of nursing, while an RN qualification is obtained through a five-year Bachelor of Nursing (BN) program offered by universities.

HND Nursing graduates who intend to participate in NYSC must meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of HND Nursing Program: Possess a valid HND certificate in Nursing from an accredited institution.
  • Mandatory Supervised Clinical Attachment: Complete a one-year mandatory Supervised Clinical Experience (Attachment) in an approved healthcare facility.
  • NYSC Registration and Mobilization: Register for NYSC and follow the mobilization process as outlined by the NYSC authorities.

The NYSC program plays a significant role in shaping the lives of Nigerian graduates, including those pursuing a career in nursing. Understanding the rationale behind the distinction between RNs and HND Nursing graduates and adhering to the NYSC requirements is crucial for HND Nursing graduates to navigate this important phase of their professional journey.
